Interesting articles and news about ice dams and snow removal in the brutal winters of the Twin Cities.

Minnesota winter 2019 decided to hit us all at once over Thanksgiving weekend. After a drive through St. Paul yesterday many of the side streets were not plowed, with mounds of snow everywhere making it difficult to navigate. Minneapolis is likely facing the same challenges. Our friends to the north in Duluth are still digging out from a whopping two feet of wet snow. This one proved to be a powerful storm. Here at Gopher Snow and Ice our holiday weekend was a nonstop affair keeping all of our commercial lots open. Yesterday was spent salting/sanding. Today we are preparing for a predicted busy ice dam season.

The large amount of heavy wet snow is the perfect fuel to start ice dams. There are many homes and commerical buildings already forming large icicles. If you have icicles hanging from your roof it is the first sign you have an ice dam forming. The projected forecast is not going to help the problem. This week the weather will be warming enough during the day to melt the snow and getting colder at night to freeze it all at your eaves. Next week calls for colder tempuratures, which causes people to turn up the heat in their home and essentially helping snow on the roof melt from the inside. Gopher Snow and Ice has been clearing ice dams for over 25 years and we would consider this a perfect storm for major ice dam problems this winter.

Homeowners can take a few steps right now it help the situation. First, clear the snow off your roof around the eaves. A roof rake is perfect for this task. If your roof is too high to reach, it's best to call in the professionals at Gopher Snow and Ice. Our crews are all roofers by trade and navigate ladders and roofs extremly well despite the conditions. Second, check the installation in your attic. Have a professional add more if it has settled over time. This is something homeonwers can do as well. Third, add heat cables to the eaves of your roof. This is difficult to do when there is already snow on the roof and an ice dam forming. Your roof would have to be cleared first and then the heat cables installed.

Call Gopher Snow and Ice for all you snow and ice problems!
